About Honey Hill Inn at Engadine
Owl's Nest Inn At Engadine was built in 1885 by Captain John Hoyt in the mountains just outside of Asheville, North Carolina. The house, originally named Engadine, has been restored and decorated to maintain its Victorian character and charm. Owl's Nest Inn was added to the name in 1995. The house was built incorporating the most modern technology of its time. Electricity was supplied to the house by a water-powered generator built on the property. Running water was provided to marble top sinks in water closets by a gravity-supplied system. Water was pumped by servants to a storage tank in the attic. From there it was supplied to sinks contained in closets between each of the bedrooms on the second floor. There was also central heat in the house provided by a coal furnace in the basement. Even though electricity is now provided by the local power company, the coal furnace has been replaced with modern gas heat and an air conditioning system has been installed, the water closets are still in use in some of the bedrooms. It is believed that the barn currently stands where Captain Hoyt's locally famous Engadine wine was once made.
We recently added 2 luxury log cabins on top of the same mountain that Mary Hoyt, the daughter of Captain Hoyt, wrote about watching the Vanderbilt home being constructed. The cabins are special, as they are not kits, but designed by one of our guests. They became a reality on August 16, 2003. Mary Hoyt, the daughter of Captain John Hoyt, wrote in her daily journal about being able to view the Vanderbilt home in 1887. She sat and wrote in her journal among the Vineyards of Engadine, and the cabins are situated there today. The cabins have whirlpool baths and wood burning fireplaces to enhance your winter stay. The cabins and inn are only 20 minutes from one of the best known ski resorts in North Carolina, Cataloochee Ski Resort, whitewater rafting, tubing, horse back riding, hot air ballooning and so much more. Most of our guests come to our inn to visit the Biltmore Estate, but leave disappointed because there is so much more to see and do. Just ask us and we can make your week special here at Engadine.
